2023 OAA Conference Highlights

Ohio Auctioneers Gather for Annual Conference

Auctioneers from across the state convened for the Ohio Auctioneers Association (OAA) annual conference. The conference was held at the Nationwide Hotel & Conference Center in Lewis Center, Ohio, January 13-14, 2023.

Highlights of this year’s conference included the annual Trade Show with over a dozen industry vendors, the Ohio Auctioneers Championship, Auction Marketing Awards, the Hall of Fame Induction, Presidential Luncheon, and the election of the Board of Directors.

Throughout the weekend, Auctioneers were presented with dynamic and engaging educational seminars from industry leading Auctioneers and presenters sponsored by the Ohio Auctioneers Commission/Department of Agriculture.

Austin Miller of Amanda, OH was crowned the 2023 Ohio Auctioneers Senior Division Champion with Orrin Bussey of Greenville, OH, crowned the Junior Champion.

The highest award conveyed to an Auctioneer in Ohio is an induction into the Ohio Auctioneer’s Hall of Fame. Glenn Hess, Sardinia, OH was inducted as the 2023 Hall of Fame inductee.

The OAA held their annual election of officers at the annual membership business meeting, electing Susan Johnson of Guilford, IN – President, Billy Peyton of Middletown, OH– Vice-President, Brad McGovern of New Waterford, OH – Treasurer, Darby Walton, Robert Hall, and Grant Bussey were elected as Directors.

Ohio Auctioneer Continuing Education- Two ZOOM CE Sessions

The OAA will be hosting two three (3) hour sessions in  2023 to cover the required three (3) hours outlined in 4707.101 (B) (1) (a)  below.  These two sessions will be online via ZOOM presented at no charge to the attendees with funding provided by the Ohio Auctioneer Commission and the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

March 28, 2023 – LAW (9:00am – 12:00pm)

May 22, 2023 – ETHICS (9:00am – 12:00pm)

4707.101. Continuing Education.

(A) A licensed auctioneer shall complete eight hours of continuing education in accordance with this section prior to renewal of the license under section 4707.10 of the Revised Code. The auction firm manager of a licensed auction firm shall complete eight hours of continuing education in accordance with this section prior to the renewal of the auction firm license under section 4707.10 of the Revised Code.

(B)(1) Except as provided in division (B)(2) of this section, a licensed auctioneer and an auction firm manager shall complete the eight hours of continuing education as follows:

(a) Three of the hours shall include areas of instruction in any of the following areas: an overview of this chapter and rules adopted under it, including any recent amendments to that chapter or rules; contract law; the uniform commercial code; auction ethics; or trust or escrow accounts.

(b) Five of the hours shall include areas of instruction in any of the following areas: advertising and marketing; business math and accounting; insurance and liability; federal firearms law; business management; motor vehicle auctions; real estate auctions; or personal property auctions.

(2) If a licensed auctioneer has been issued a license with a period of validity of twelve months or less, the auctioneer shall complete four hours of continuing education as follows:

(a) One hour in the areas of instruction described in division (B)(1)(a) of this section;

(b) Three hours in the areas of instruction described in division (B)(1)(b) of this section.
